Cancer Research UK
is the leading funder of cancer research in the UK

cancer
cancer
Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research.
They support research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses.
Cancer is common – around 285,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the UK. At Cancer Research UK they are working hard to improve our understanding of cancer and develop better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.
More than one in three of us will develop cancer in their lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found.
Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, but gets very little Government funding. They are almost entirely funded by the public – without the generosity and dedication of their supporters they would not be able to continue to make progress against cancer.
Every year of research improves the understanding of how to prevent cancer and treat it more effectively. In 2006/07 over 4,250 world-class cancer scientists, doctors and nurses were able to take forward their pioneering investigations. This is only possible because of the incredible support they receive from the public, but there is still much more to do.

    Great Ormond Street Hospital
Giving hope to sick children and their families

GOSH

Great Ormond Street Hospital is a world-class children’s hospital, with the broadest range of paediatric specialists under one roof anywhere in the UK. They welcome around 150,000 patient visits each year, treating patients with the most complex, life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. They are totally committed to find treatments and cures for some of the rarest and most difficult illnesses.

They rank with the small handful of truly word-class children’s hospitals but delivering this standard of treatment, care and research is not cheap.

Many of their patients and their families are treated in conditions which are crowded, uncomfortable, lacking in privacy and falling short of what their families and staff deserve. For example cardiac intensive care offers each patient only one-third of the space their staff say they need. To deliver the best modern care they need to redevelop the hospital.

About Them
Great Ormond Street Hospital treats many thousands of patients each year - children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions. The NHS funds our day to day core activity but they need extra resources to deliver world class clinical care, research and staff training. That's where the hospital's charity steps in.

The Charity
Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity aims to raise over £50 million this year to boost the NHS funding. They need to raise funds for the hospital’s development, buying new equipment, supporting families and helping crucial new research.

The Hospital
Great Ormond Street Hospital offers the widest range of children services under one roof in Britain, and pioneers new treatments and drugs with its research partner, the UCL Institute of Child Health. Each year they have more than 150,000 patient visits.

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
wants a world in which all people who are blind and partially-sighted enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities as everyone else.

Their mission:
Their mission is to provide guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services that meet the needs of blind and partially-sighted people.

They also:
· campaign for the rights of people who are blind and partially-sighted,
· educate the public about eye care
· invest millions of pounds in eye disease research

Independence
Once someone has lost their sight, a guide dog can give back a degree of freedom that often feels little short of miraculous. Most guide dog owners will tell you that when it comes to mobility aids, these highly-trained and sensitive animals are second to none. They have been expertly breeding and training guide dogs now for over seventy years and have provided thousands of dogs to blind and partially-sighted people of all ages and from all walks of life.
When sight loss threatens to take away a person’s freedom of movement, guide dogs is there to help
.

Eye health
They also know, however, that there’s an enormous amount that can be done to help prevent sight loss occurring in the first place. Sophisticated medical research is being undertaken into many different causes of blindness, much of the UK-based work commissioned and funded by Guide Dogs. Their findings could eventually lead to new treatments for common eye diseases in both adults and children.
But eye health is not just the business of scientists. Part of our mission is to get across simple messages about eye health to the public, particularly to children and young people. We can all be responsible for taking care of our sight and Guide Dogs’ Programme of eye health education is giving people the information they need to help prevent future sight loss.

Campaigning for equal rights
They hope that their ophthalmic research and eye health programmes will result in a progressively lower incidence of blindness in the years to come. For now, however, vision impairment is still a fact of life for many thousands of people and they are campaigning alongside them for rights that most sighted people take for granted.
With their focus on mobility, freedom to travel is close to their hearts and they have lobbied extensively for the right of guide dog owners to enjoy access to all forms of transport. They have worked closely with guide dog owners, transport companies and MPs and together they have won major victories. They will be launching more campaigns over the coming years.

    SportsAid
The Future of British Sport
sports aid

Welcome to the future of British sport

SportsAid is the charity for sports people, helping the next generation of young British sportsmen and women to succeed.

SportsAid is the first organisation that says “Yes” to a talented young athlete. They offer help at the start of the journey, when, more often than not, mum and dad are the solitary sponsor. At that stage, independent recognition and financial assistance makes a huge difference.

If you or your organisation would like to help young British sporting talent, either nationally or locally, then you can through SportsAid. You can be part of it and make the difference.

Why is SportsAid unique
SportsAid helps talented young sports people at an age when no-one else does. When they start out, more often than not their only sponsors are Mum and Dad.

Lottery funding has helped British sport enormously in recent years, but it cannot fund every aspect of sport and money rarely trickles down to the 12-16 year-old age group. That’s why their work is so vital. If SportsAid doesn’t fund this generation, who will.

Talented Athletic Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
SportsAid is also at the heart of the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). This is a Government backed programme which supports young sporting talent, specially designed to cater for the special needs of athletes within the education system. The programme aims to reduce the drop-out of talented athletes from sport due to academic and financial pressures and through provision of a tailored package of services, comprising coaching, sports medicine, sport science etc., ensures the athletes have the optimal level of support to train and compete whilst studying.
